What's New for 2011 Check the Price List General News 2011 is officially our 22nd year of providing hatching kits to schools. We got our first birds in 1988, and we provided our first hatching 'kit' to a teacher friend of a friend in 1989. Although we have tried to keep the number of local kits at a fairly constant level, our connections on the web have been growing steadily since we went online in 2001.

The birds can't lay more than one egg each per day, and I can only put so many eggs in my incubator at one time. Eggs were being artificially incubated long before there was electricity. One only needs to experience a rotten egg that has exploded once to appreciate the value in being able to see “inside” before hatch time. Originally, eggs were held up to the flame of a candle to see inside - probably because candles provide a nice, small, intense source of light.

[Looks a bit like the moon.]Bumpy shells often indicate some nutritional imbalance, or other form of stress on the bird that produced the egg. This would indicate that the egg may also not have the nutrition it needs to grow into a healthy duckling. If you are not especially short on eggs, don't use this one for hatching.

Wash eggs in very warm water that is not too hot to touch; it must at least be warmer than the egg. Cold water causes things to contract. The inner part of the egg will contract faster than the shell, causing a space inside the egg - which will be filled with the cold water, and anything else like dirt, manure, bacteria that gets pulled in with it.
